Norwich Porridge
Norwich Porridge
The Proof is in the Porridge
Porridge might be one of Britain's most familiar breakfasts, but Norwich Porridge started with a very reasonable question: why does something eaten by millions of us every morning have to be quite so boring?
Their answer was to do porridge differently.
Proudly independent and proudly Norwich, Norwich Porridge takes locally sourced oats and combines them with generous quantities of fruits, nuts, seeds and spices to create proper porridge with considerably more personality.
Their philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: don't scrimp on the good stuff, don't fill the packet with things that don't need to be there and don't assume breakfast has to be boring.
Or, as they put it rather better themselves:
Your spoon deserves better.
About Norwich Porridge
Norwich Porridge was born from a love of porridge – and a frustration with just how uninspiring so many porridge mixes had become.
They wanted more flavour, more texture and, crucially, more of the interesting bits in every bowl.
So rather than producing an oat-heavy mix where you find yourself hunting around for the occasional raisin or nut, Norwich Porridge takes a deliberately generous approach to its ingredients.
The oats are sourced locally, while fruits, nuts, seeds and spices are used in quantities that mean they actually contribute something to the finished bowl.
The result is porridge that's creamy and satisfying but also interesting enough to make breakfast something to look forward to.
Why We Stock Norwich Porridge
At The Norfolk Deli, we're always looking for Norfolk producers doing something genuinely interesting with everyday food.
Norwich Porridge fits that description rather nicely.
Porridge isn't new. It doesn't need reinventing for the sake of it. But there's plenty of room to make it better.
Locally sourced oats, proper ingredients, generous flavour combinations and an independent Norfolk business determined to make breakfast less boring tick quite a few boxes for us.
And when a producer describes itself as being prepared to make porridge that would “make a traditional Scot blush”, we were probably always going to get along.
What Makes Norwich Porridge Different?
It starts with the oats.
Norwich Porridge uses locally sourced oats, carefully milled to give its porridge a creamy, satisfying texture.
But it's what happens next that really sets the range apart.
Rather than treating fruit, nuts, seeds and spices as an afterthought, they're an important part of the mix. That means proper pieces, plenty of flavour and no need to go searching around the bottom of the bowl for the good bits.
Norwich Porridge is also very clear about what it doesn't think breakfast needs.
No unnecessary additives. No reliance on added sugar to create flavour. No Artificial Nonsense.
Just good ingredients allowed to do what good ingredients do best.
From Proper Porridge to Pudding for Breakfast
If you want to keep things beautifully simple, there's Porridginal – made with 100% British wholegrain oats and ready for whatever fruit, honey, nuts, seeds or other toppings you want to throw at it.
If breakfast should be considerably more adventurous, flavours such as Apple Strudel combine wholegrain oats with generous helpings of fruit and warming spice.
That's really the Norwich Porridge approach in a bowl.
Start with proper oats. Add proper ingredients. Don't be timid with flavour.
How to Enjoy Norwich Porridge
The obvious answer is hot, creamy and eaten with a spoon.
But there's plenty more you can do with it.
Make it traditionally with milk or water, prepare it as overnight oats, add yoghurt and fresh fruit, scatter over nuts or seeds, drizzle with honey or simply let one of the flavoured mixes do the work for you.
Porridginal also provides a brilliant blank canvas if you prefer creating your own combinations – sweet or savoury.
There aren't many breakfasts quite as adaptable as porridge.
Meet Norwich Porridge
Norwich Porridge is proudly Norwich and proudly independent.
It's a Norfolk business built around the idea that everyday food deserves just as much attention as anything else we eat.
That means locally sourced oats, generous ingredients, imaginative flavours and a refusal to bulk things out with unnecessary additions.
Norfolk may, as Norwich Porridge points out, be famously flat.
Their ambitions for breakfast are considerably higher.
