What does Norfolk red wine taste like?
Norfolk's climate naturally lends itself to fresh, fruit-driven red wines, typically showing flavours of cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, plum and hedgerow fruits. Depending on the grape, vintage and winemaking, you'll also find more savoury, earthy and spicy characteristics, while wines matured in oak can develop additional notes of toast, vanilla and warming spice.
If you enjoy cool-climate Pinot Noir, lighter European reds or the bright fruit and freshness associated with styles such as Beaujolais, Norfolk red wine is well worth discovering. Which red grapes are grown in Norfolk?
Pinot Noir is one of the most recognisable varieties, producing elegant, fragrant wines with red and dark cherry fruit, gentle tannins and plenty of freshness.
Pinot Noir Précoce, an earlier-ripening relative of Pinot Noir particularly suited to the English climate, can produce beautifully bright, juicy and silky reds with raspberry, cherry, redcurrant and bramble characteristics.
You'll also encounter varieties including Regent, capable of producing deeper-coloured wines with red berry, spice and savoury characteristics, and Cabernet Noir, another variety suited to cooler growing conditions.
