The Cheesemonger’s Notes
The Grand British Cheeseboard
Seven outstanding cheeses. Seven distinctive characters. One grand celebration of British cheesemaking.
Britain produces some truly remarkable cheeses. From traditional farmhouse favourites to modern artisan creations, our cheesemakers have earned a reputation that extends far beyond these shores.
And with so many extraordinary cheeses to choose from, why settle for just a few?
The Grand British Cheeseboard brings together a generous selection of Britain's finest artisan cheeses, carefully chosen by our cheesemongers to showcase the variety, character and craftsmanship of British cheesemaking.
From the nettle-wrapped Cornish Yarg and beautifully balanced Colston Bassett Stilton to the rich, creamy Tunworth and famously aromatic Stinking Bishop, this is a cheeseboard that travels the length and breadth of Britain.
You'll discover soft, hard, blue and washed-rind cheeses, each bringing something different to the selection.
And because we're cheesemongers, not simply hamper packers, we've chosen cheeses that work together, offering a balance of flavours, textures and styles rather than simply filling a box.
Seven cheeses. Approximately 1.75kg. A proper celebration of British cheese.
Inside this cheeseboard you'll find
The cheeses
Doddington or Cheesemaker's Special (approx. 250g)
Our first choice is Doddington, made at North Doddington Farm in Northumberland.
A remarkable farmhouse cheese with a firm texture and deep, nutty, savoury flavours reminiscent of the great Alpine cheeses.
Depending on availability, we may include Cheesemaker's Special from Alsop & Walker in Sussex, a distinctive artisan cheese selected for its flavour and character.
Cornish Yarg (approx. 250g)
Made by Lynher Dairies in Cornwall.
One of Britain's most recognisable artisan cheeses, Cornish Yarg is wrapped in nettle leaves, creating its distinctive appearance and gently earthy character.
Beneath the rind is a semi-hard cow's milk cheese with a fresh, creamy texture and delicate flavour.
Colston Bassett Stilton (approx. 250g)
Made by Colston Bassett Dairy in Nottinghamshire.
There are blue cheeses, and then there's Colston Bassett Stilton.
Rich, creamy and beautifully balanced, with deep savoury flavours and a lingering finish, this is one of the great British cheeses and a benchmark for traditional Stilton.
A proper cheeseboard deserves a proper blue.
Woodside Red (approx. 250g)
Made by Alsop & Walker in East Sussex.
A Red Leicester-style cheese with a striking orange colour, a gently crumbly texture and a rich, sweet, nutty flavour.
A wonderfully characterful cheese that brings both colour and a different style of maturity to the selection.
Tunworth (approx. 250g)
Made by Hampshire Cheese Company in Hampshire.
Often described as Britain's answer to Camembert, Tunworth is a soft, bloomy-rind cow's milk cheese with a rich, creamy interior and complex mushroomy, earthy flavours.
At its best, it's wonderfully indulgent.
Burford (approx. 250g)
Made by King Stone Dairy in the Cotswolds.
An Alpine-style cow's milk cheese with a smooth, buttery texture and beautifully balanced flavours of nuts, sweet cream and fresh pasture.
An elegant addition that demonstrates the growing diversity of modern British cheesemaking.
Stinking Bishop (approx. 250g)
Made by Charles Martell & Son in Gloucestershire.
One of Britain's most distinctive cheeses, and certainly one of its most memorably named.
This washed-rind cheese is famous for its powerful aroma, but beneath that rather assertive exterior lies a wonderfully soft, rich and creamy cheese with a complex, full-bodied flavour.
Proof that you should never judge a cheese by its smell alone.
The accompaniments
A cheeseboard of this size deserves accompaniments that offer variety without distracting from the cheeses themselves.
- Two packs of artisan cheese crackers – Carefully selected to complement the different textures and flavours of the cheeses.
- The Garden Pantry Chutney – Handmade in Norfolk, providing a delicious sweet and savoury contrast.
- Candi's Chutney – Produced in Norfolk by Candi Robertson, bringing additional depth and character to the cheeseboard.
- Eastgate Larder Medlar Jelly (small jar) – Made by Jane Steward in Eastgate, Norfolk. A traditional English preserve with a delicate sweetness that works particularly well with mature and blue cheeses.
Together, these accompaniments turn an impressive collection of British cheeses into a complete cheeseboard experience.
Freshly cut by our cheesemongers
There's an important difference between buying a box of cheese and buying cheese from a proper cheesemonger.
At The Norfolk Deli, most of our cheeses are cut by hand specifically for your order, either on the day of dispatch or the day before.
We don't simply take a collection of pre-packed cheeses off a shelf and put them into a box.
Your cheeses are selected, cut and packed by people who work with artisan cheese every day.
All quoted weights are approximate, reflecting the nature of hand-cut cheese.
Cut cheeses will have a minimum shelf life of 10 days from cutting.
For advice on storing and enjoying your selection, read our guide: The Truth About Unrefrigerated Cheese.
Packaging, delivery and gifting
We believe the cheese should be the impressive part, not the packaging.
You won't find unnecessary wicker baskets or elaborate presentation materials here.
Instead, your cheeses are carefully packed in an appropriately sized box, using insulation and ice packs to help protect them during their journey.
It's a practical approach that puts the quality and condition of the cheese first.
The price includes postage and packing, and you can add a personalised handwritten gift message at no additional charge.
Whether you're sending a gift to a serious cheese enthusiast, entertaining a gathering of friends or planning a particularly memorable cheeseboard of your own, this is British cheesemaking at its finest.
