The Cheesemonger’s Notes
Award-winning mould-ripened British cheese with buttery sweetness and gentle earthy depth
Stoney Cross is a mould-ripened cheese made by Lyburn Farmhouse Cheesemakers in the New Forest, Hampshire — the same dairy behind the celebrated Old Winchester. Created originally as a younger companion cheese to balance the long maturation of Old Winchester, Stoney Cross has gone on to become a multi-award-winning cheese in its own right.
Produced in small truckles and larger wheels, and matured for around eight weeks, Stoney Cross develops a supple, creamy texture beneath its natural rind. Its style is reminiscent of a rustic Tomme, offering approachability while retaining character and depth.
The flavour is creamy and buttery with gentle sweetness, finishing with a subtle earthy note. It appeals to a broad range of customers — delicate enough for those who prefer milder cheeses, yet layered enough to satisfy seasoned cheese lovers.
Named after the former RAF Stoney Cross airfield just south of the dairy, the cheese reflects both its landscape and the proud farming heritage of the New Forest.
Stoney Cross has achieved remarkable recognition, including:
• Three Star Gold – Great Taste Awards
• Super Gold – World Cheese Awards
