Why It’s On Our Shelves

Tender | Delicate | Mediterranean

Tender Italian artichoke hearts traditionally prepared and preserved in extra virgin olive oil for a simple, beautifully flavoured antipasto.

Seggiano Artichoke Hearts in Extra Virgin Olive Oil celebrate one of the Mediterranean's great ingredients without trying to do too much to it.

Carefully prepared artichoke hearts are preserved in extra virgin olive oil, allowing their naturally delicate, slightly nutty and gently earthy flavour to remain at the forefront. Soft and tender while retaining enough texture to make them satisfying to eat, they're a wonderfully simple addition to an antipasti plate – and an exceptionally useful ingredient to keep in the cupboard.

As with so many Seggiano products, what makes these particularly appealing is the emphasis on good ingredients and minimal processing. Rather than disguising the artichokes beneath unnecessary flavours, the simplicity allows the quality of the vegetable to do the talking.

What do Seggiano Artichoke Hearts taste like?

Expect a delicate, savoury and slightly nutty flavour, with the characteristic gentle earthiness of artichoke complemented by the richness of extra virgin olive oil.

The texture is wonderfully tender, making them delicious eaten exactly as they come from the jar.

There's nothing aggressive or overpowering here – just the subtle flavour of properly prepared artichokes and good olive oil.

How to use Seggiano Artichoke Hearts

Opening the jar and adding them to an antipasti platter is probably the easiest option, but they're considerably more versatile than that. Try them:

  • As part of an Italian antipasti selection
  • With charcuterie and cheese
  • Spoon onto bruschetta or crostini
  • Tossed through freshly cooked pasta
  • Added to risotto
  • With mozzarella or burrata
  • On pizza and flatbreads
  • Tossed through salads
  • Alongside grilled chicken or fish
  • Added to frittatas and omelettes
  • Served with roasted Mediterranean vegetables
  • Chopped and stirred through a pasta sauce
  • Served with good bread

They also make an excellent addition to a grazing board when you want something savoury to balance richer cheeses and cured meats.

And once the artichokes have gone, don't throw away the extra virgin olive oil. Use the remaining flavoured oil for dressings, drizzling over vegetables or dipping good crusty bread.

Why we like them

Artichokes are one of those ingredients that can involve quite a bit of preparation when you're starting with them fresh. Having someone else do the hard work – and do it properly – is rather appealing.

What we particularly like here is the simplicity.

Good artichokes. Good extra virgin olive oil. Very little interference.

They're the sort of ingredient that can turn bread, cheese, and charcuterie into a proper antipasti spread in a matter of minutes, while also being useful enough to find their way into pasta, salads, risotto, or onto a pizza.

And preserving them in extra virgin olive oil rather than treating the oil as an afterthought makes the whole jar useful – right down to the last drop.
