The Cheesemonger’s Notes
Five outstanding cheeses. Five distinctive characters. One very British cheeseboard.
Britain makes some extraordinary cheese. And while we're particularly proud of the cheesemakers here in East Anglia, we'd be doing the rest of the country a considerable disservice if we stopped at the county boundary.
The Great British Cheeseboard brings together five exceptional artisan cheeses from across Britain, selected to showcase the variety, character and sheer quality of British cheesemaking.
From the nettle-wrapped Cornish Yarg and rich, creamy Colston Bassett Stilton to the beautifully soft Tunworth and the nutty complexity of Doddington, this is a cheeseboard that travels the country without you having to leave the table.
You'll discover different textures, styles and flavours, from mellow and buttery to mature, savoury and wonderfully bold.
And because we're cheesemongers, not simply hamper packers, every cheese has been selected for the contribution it makes to the complete cheeseboard.
Five cheeses. Approximately 1.25kg. A proper celebration of British cheese.
Inside this cheeseboard you'll find
The cheeses
Doddington or Cheesemaker's Special (approx. 250g)
Our first choice is Doddington, made at North Doddington Farm in Northumberland.
A remarkable farmhouse cheese with a firm texture and deep, nutty, savoury flavours reminiscent of the great Alpine cheeses. Rich, complex and beautifully matured, it's a wonderful example of British cheesemaking at its most accomplished.
Depending on availability, we may include Cheesemaker's Special from Alsop & Walker in Sussex, a distinctive artisan cheese selected for its flavour, character and craftsmanship.
Cornish Yarg (approx. 250g)
Made by Lynher Dairies in Cornwall.
One of Britain's most recognisable artisan cheeses, Cornish Yarg is wrapped in nettle leaves, which help create its distinctive appearance and flavour.
Beneath the rind is a semi-hard cow's milk cheese with a fresh, creamy texture and a delicate, earthy character. A genuine Cornish classic.
Colston Bassett Stilton (approx. 250g)
Made by Colston Bassett Dairy in Nottinghamshire.
There are blue cheeses, and then there's Colston Bassett Stilton.
Rich, creamy and beautifully balanced, with deep savoury flavours and a lingering finish, this is one of the great British cheeses and a benchmark for traditional Stilton.
A proper cheeseboard deserves a proper blue.
Woodside Red (approx. 250g)
Made by Alsop & Walker in East Sussex.
A Red Leicester-style cheese with a striking orange colour, a gently crumbly texture and a rich, sweet, nutty flavour.
A wonderfully characterful cheese that brings both colour and a different style of maturity to the selection.
Tunworth (approx. 250g)
Made by Hampshire Cheese Company in Hampshire.
Often described as Britain's answer to Camembert, Tunworth is a soft, bloomy-rind cow's milk cheese with a rich, creamy interior and complex mushroomy, earthy flavours.
At its best, it's wonderfully indulgent and a fine example of just how accomplished British soft cheesemaking has become.
The accompaniments
Great cheese doesn't need much dressing up. Just a couple of well-chosen accompaniments.
- Pack of artisan cheese crackers – Carefully selected to complement the different cheeses without overpowering their flavours.
- Jar of The Garden Pantry chutney – Handmade in Norfolk, bringing a delicious sweet and savoury contrast to the selection.
Together, they provide everything needed to enjoy a beautifully balanced British cheeseboard.
Freshly cut by our cheesemongers
There's an important difference between buying a box of cheese and buying cheese from a proper cheesemonger.
At The Norfolk Deli, most of our cheeses are cut by hand specifically for your order, either on the day of dispatch or the day before.
We don't simply take a selection of pre-packed cheeses off a shelf and put them into a box.
Your cheeses are selected, cut and packed by people who work with artisan cheese every day.
All quoted weights are approximate, reflecting the nature of hand-cut cheese.
Cut cheeses have a minimum shelf life of 10 days from cutting.
For advice on storing and enjoying your selection, read our guide: The Truth About Unrefrigerated Cheese.
Packaging, delivery and gifting
We believe the cheese should be the impressive part, not the packaging.
You won't find unnecessary wicker baskets or elaborate presentation materials here.
Instead, your cheeses are carefully packed in an appropriately sized box, using insulation and ice packs to help protect them during their journey.
It's a practical approach that puts the quality and condition of the cheese first.
The price includes postage and packing, and you can add a personalised handwritten gift message at no additional charge.
Whether you're sending a gift to a serious cheese enthusiast, introducing someone to the extraordinary variety of British artisan cheese or planning a particularly good cheeseboard of your own, this is a delicious way to discover just how good British cheese has become.
