Essence Botanicals Seville Orange & Norfolk Lavender Marmalade takes the familiar bittersweet character of a traditional Seville orange marmalade and gives it a distinctly Norfolk twist with the addition of Norfolk-grown lavender.
Handmade in small batches, the sharp citrus and characteristic bitterness of Seville oranges remain very much at the heart of the marmalade. The lavender adds a gentle aromatic, floral note rather than overwhelming the fruit, creating a preserve that's familiar enough for the traditional marmalade lover but just different enough to make things considerably more interesting.
It's a lovely example of how a classic preserve can be given a sense of place – Seville oranges meet Norfolk lavender in one rather distinctive jar.
What does Seville Orange & Norfolk Lavender Marmalade taste like?
Expect the bright citrus, gentle sweetness and characteristic bitterness of Seville orange, followed by a subtle floral note from the lavender.
The key here is balance. Lavender can easily dominate, but used carefully it complements the aromatic qualities already present in the orange, adding another layer of fragrance and flavour.
The result is fresh, bittersweet and delicately floral, with the Seville orange remaining very much the star.

Naturally, it's excellent spread generously over hot buttered toast, but its combination of citrus and floral flavours makes it surprisingly versatile.

Why we like it
There's nothing wrong with a really good traditional Seville orange marmalade, but sometimes it's interesting to find someone prepared to take a classic and do something a little different with it.
The addition of Norfolk lavender gives this marmalade its own personality without losing what makes Seville marmalade so good in the first place. You still get that wonderful citrus sharpness and bitterness, but there's a delicate aromatic floral character sitting quietly behind it.
And, of course, we particularly like the fact that the lavender gives this jar a genuine connection to Norfolk and the ingredients grown here.
It's recognisably marmalade – just not quite as you know it.
