Why It’s On Our Shelves
Citrus | Fruity | Bittersweet
A vibrant Norfolk marmalade bursting with bold, fruity flavour.
Produced in Norfolk by Essence →
Essence Botanicals Seville & Plum Marmalade brings together the characteristic bitterness of Seville oranges with the natural sweetness and rich fruitiness of plums to create a beautifully balanced preserve.
Handmade in small batches in Norfolk, it's a marmalade with considerably more going on than simply orange and sugar. The sharp, slightly bitter citrus character of Seville oranges is softened by ripe plum, creating layers of sweet, tart and fruity flavour that work just as well beyond the breakfast table as they do spread generously over hot buttered toast.
What does Seville & Plum Marmalade taste like?
Expect the distinctive citrus sharpness and gentle bitterness of Seville orange, balanced by the softer, sweeter character of plum.
The result is bright and fruity without becoming overly sweet, with enough citrus bite to remind you that this is very definitely a marmalade rather than a jam.
It's that balance between bitterness, sweetness and fruit that makes it particularly moreish.
How to enjoy it
Toast is the obvious starting point – and a very good one – but this is far too versatile a jar to restrict to breakfast.
Try it:
- Generously spread over hot buttered toast
- With croissants or freshly baked bread
- Alongside mature Cheddar and other hard cheeses
- As part of a cheeseboard
- Swirled through natural yoghurt
- With porridge or overnight oats
- As a glaze for ham, pork or duck
- Added to cakes and desserts
- As a fruity addition to sauces and dressings
The combination of sweet plum and bitter orange makes it particularly good alongside rich and savoury flavours.

Why we like it
We like preserves that actually taste of the fruit they're made from, and this is a great example.
Seville orange brings exactly the bitterness and citrus bite you want from a proper marmalade, while the addition of plum gives it another dimension – softer, fruitier and naturally sweeter.
It's also exactly the sort of product we enjoy championing at The Norfolk Deli: made locally in Norfolk, produced in small batches and offering something genuinely different from the mass-produced jars you'll find on a supermarket shelf.
Breakfast might be where you first open the jar, but we suspect it won't be the only time you reach for it.
