Why It’s On Our Shelves

Burn Valley Vineyard Marsh Sparkling Extra Brut

A dry, fruit-driven Norfolk sparkling wine made from Seyval Blanc and matured for 24 months on its lees.

Burn Valley Marsh Sparkling Extra Brut is the vineyard's first sparkling wine made from Seyval Blanc, produced using the traditional method with secondary fermentation taking place in the bottle.

After that second fermentation, the wine spends 24 months ageing on its lees, allowing additional character and complexity to develop while retaining the fresh, fruit-driven style of the wine.

The finished wine is Extra Brut, giving it a particularly dry character and making it an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys sparkling wine with freshness, precision and relatively little sweetness.

And it has already attracted recognition, receiving a Silver Medal at the WineGB East Awards 2026.

What does Burn Valley Marsh Sparkling taste like?

Burn Valley describes Marsh as a fruit-driven style of sparkling wine.

Its Extra Brut style means the wine is particularly dry, while 24 months of lees ageing following secondary fermentation gives the wine time to develop additional complexity.

It's a sparkling wine for those who prefer freshness and fruit without a sweeter finish.

What is Seyval Blanc?

Seyval Blanc is a white grape variety grown successfully in England's cool climate and is used for both still and sparkling wines.

Its natural freshness makes it particularly suited to sparkling wine production.

Marsh is significant for Burn Valley because it is the vineyard's first Seyval Blanc sparkling wine.

What does Extra Brut mean?

Extra Brut describes a particularly dry style of sparkling wine.

The term refers to the relatively low level of residual sugar in the finished wine. In practical terms, if you prefer sparkling wines that taste crisp and dry rather than noticeably sweet, Extra Brut is a style worth looking for.

Despite its dryness, Burn Valley describes Marsh as fruit driven, so dryness shouldn't be confused with an absence of fruit character.

Is Burn Valley Marsh made using the traditional method?

Yes. Marsh is made using the traditional method, with its secondary fermentation taking place inside the bottle.

This is followed by 24 months of ageing on the lees before the wine is finished.

It's the method associated with many of the world's best-known sparkling wines and allows the wine to develop additional character during its time in bottle.

What does 24 months on lees mean?

After the secondary fermentation has created the bubbles inside the bottle, the wine remains in contact with the spent yeast cells – known as the lees.

Marsh spends 24 months on its lees.

Extended lees ageing can add texture and complexity to sparkling wine, complementing the fresher characteristics of the grape itself.

Where is Burn Valley Marsh Sparkling made?

Marsh is produced by Burn Valley Vineyard in Norfolk.

It forms part of the increasingly interesting range of wines being grown and produced in the county and offers an opportunity to discover a traditional-method English sparkling wine made from Seyval Blanc.

What food goes with Extra Brut sparkling wine?

The dry, fresh character of an Extra Brut sparkling wine makes it particularly versatile with food.

We'd consider serving it with:

  • Seafood and shellfish
  • Smoked salmon
  • Fresh fish
  • Light starters
  • Salads
  • Soft and creamy cheeses
  • Canapés

Or serve it well chilled as an aperitif before dinner.

Is Burn Valley Marsh Sparkling award-winning?

Yes. Burn Valley Marsh Sparkling Extra Brut won a Silver Medal at the WineGB East Awards 2026.

That's particularly notable given that this is Burn Valley's first Seyval Blanc sparkling wine.

Why we like it

There's plenty here to make this bottle interesting.

It's Norfolk grown and produced, made from Seyval Blanc, fermented in bottle using the traditional method and then given 24 months on its lees.

We also like the combination of an Extra Brut finish with the fruit-driven character Burn Valley has retained in the wine.

Add a 2026 WineGB East Silver Medal, and Burn Valley's first Seyval Blanc sparkling wine has made a pretty impressive start.
