Howgate Wonder is a traditional very large English cooking apple, which has been popular amongst gardeners since its introduction at the start of the 20th century. It is easy to grow and produces good crops of large sharp-flavoured cooking apples.

The flavour has plenty of tangy acidities, but it is not quite as sharp as a Bramley. When cooked, it produces an attractive lumpy puree, and it can also be used for juicing. If you like an acidic apple Howgate Wonder can also be eaten fresh.

Howgate Wonder apples can be stored in a cold shed and will keep until the following spring.

Tasting Notes

The Howgate Wonder Apple tree is a large tree. Its apples are red-streaked over a ground of yellow/green and so have that properly old-fashioned look epitomised in fairy stories. The flesh is cream coloured and has a crisp crunch (try saying that a few times!) to it which you may appreciate when the apple is properly ripe because Howgate Wonder is one of those apples that bridges the gap between cooker and eater. Mainly used as a cooker it makes a worthy opponent to the more famous Bramley and differs from it by keeping its shape when cooked, a bonus for apple tarts. The juice is a pleasant medium dry.
