What are the odds?
It probably won’t come as a surprise to anybody to read that since lockdown started a year ago a lot of our business has taken place online. We’ve sent out food boxes as far afield as the Outer Hebrides, and accepted orders placed by individuals from across the world, including New Zealand, Australia, North America a substantial number of European countries.
Obviously, many of the orders were for relatives, with a “wish we were with you” note or employees with a “thank you for everything you’ve done” note and sadly the occasional “sorry for your loss” hamper.
Apart from the hamper options we’ve created on our website such as the “Ode to Norfolk” or the “Norfolk Orchards” hampers the vast majority of hampers/boxes sent out in the last year have been created entirely by you… our online customers. It was whilst picking, wrapping and packing a number of hampers one weekend that it dawned on us that of the thousands of “create your own” hampers we’d put together and sent out, what were the odds that any one of these would by chance be replicated?
We thought it would be fun to work out what the odds would be of two people randomly choosing the same items when creating a hamper. Let’s just say the result even surprised us. We stock (rounding it down) approximately 1,000 different products online and it would be fair to say that on average hampers consist of 5 items. Taking these numbers and what we end up is are odds that are a staggering eight trillion, two hundred and fifty billion, two hundred & ninety-one million, two hundred and fifty thousand and two hundred to one.
Of course, the more that’s added to a hamper, the less chance of ever replicating the contents so it goes without saying the odds become greater. Considering that the vast majority of products on our website are made local to us in Norfolk we believe that it’s fair to say that if you’re looking to create a totally unique bespoke Norfolk produce hamper with odds of 8,250,291,250,200 to 1 what you’ve created will be truly unique.
