Every Product has a Cheeky Story - Cheeky Nibble
Probably one of the newest Norfolk producers on the scene, but already making a splash in the food scene. We strongly believe that Marietta Hickman is definitely one of watch!
Marietta approached us right at the very start of May to tell us about her granola. Not only did she offer to send us information she came round in person with samples of her Cheeky Nibble granola clusters.
We loved the packaing and loved her flavour combinations. Gone ared the traditional flavours like Pecan & Maple or Cranberry and Apple and in their place we have flavours like Victoria Sponge, Cherry Bakewell, Vanilla Latte and Banofee Pie. Certainly designed to make for a more interesting breakfast! It doesn't end there, as Marietta has plenty of ideas for additional cheeky flavours which could totally transform how we view breakfasts cereals in the future.
Not only is Cheeky Nibble Gluten Free and Vegan friendly, but Marietta has also thought hard about the environment impact her Cheely product has and with that in mind all her packaging is 100% biodegradable.
What's not to love about this product? It's original, it's tasty and good for you and it doesn't harm the environment! Of course what's even more adorable about this product is that whilst you may view it as a breakfast product, the size of the clusters makes this an excellent nibble as you walk product. Every thought of using a granola as a cheesecake base? If not then check Cheeky Nibble on Instagram @cheeky_nibble where Marietta icomes up with a range of different ways in which her prioduct can be used..
But what makes Marietta tick? who is she and what's her story? lets find out!
What was your first job?
My first job was working at the Sea Life Aquarium in Hunstanton for a summer aged 14. I have some funny memories of my time there. One of my tasks was feeding the penguins fish everyday which led me to being bitten on the bum by a particularly hungry one! I also spent most mornings searching for a greedy octopus who liked to escape his tank looking for snacks. In general it was a lot of hard work and long hours but I loved the unique experiences and seeing first hand the amazing work they do with orphaned seal pups.
When & why did you start your business?
I launched Cheeky Nibble on the 3rd of May 2021 because I wanted to recreate my childhood happiness of enjoying truly delicious breakfast cereal whilst reading my morning comic. Equally, I was sick of rooting around for those elusive granola chunks so created Cheeky Nibble to make sure every box guarantees the BIG CRUNCHY CLUSTERS that we all love. However, the big clusters serve a greater purpose than just a delicious crunch. After three years of progressively worsening symptoms I was diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome. Fortunately, I found that exercise helped me reduce my tics dramatically but the amount of exercise I needed was incredibly high. And so, creating a granola to fuel both my mornings, and a cheeky nibble on the go, was just the natural thing to do. All my granola is vegan and nut-free, and with 100% home compostable packaging, because it was important to me to make sure that anything I created was as sustainable as possible. So we can all have an indulgent breakfast, with a clear conscience.
Do you have a favourite gadget? If so, what is it?
There are several kitchen gadgets which are fundamental to my business, but my favourite piece of technology in my kitchen from a personal standpoint is my bluetooth speaker. I bake and work by myself at the moment so music makes me feel less alone and I enjoy singing along under my mask!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever had?
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
What’s the worst advice you’ve ever had?
I haven’t had bad advice so to speak, but anytime teachers or family tried to push me in a conventional or “safe” direction academically or in my career when it was not what I wanted or enjoyed doing was a mistake. For me personally I have to love what I am doing in order to do it well and give it all my energy.
What advice would you give to a start-up food business?
Well I only launched a week ago so not sure anyone would listen to me! But I feel what helped with my confidence is to be really prepared and up to date on market trends and my product category.
who’s your favourite local producer?
Winbirri Vineyard, the wines are incredible and award winning. I was lucky enough to take part in the grape harvest a few years ago. It was a really fun day where you get involved with the wine making process, ending with a yummy barbeque and drinking the wines of previous years.
Using your products, what’s your favourite recipe?
In the winter I love to make a bowl of Chocolate oatmeal topped with Vanilla Latte Granola and in the summer I like greek yogurt, fresh fruit and Cherry Bakewell Granola. I have also tried adding the granola to ice cream and that is a winner!
What makes Norfolk special for you?
I grew up here and to me I always associate Norfolk with family. I love that in my village I can walk across the street and see my grandparents or my uncle, aunt and cousins, and even my neighbours who are friends feel like family, I think that is really special.
I love the Brisley Bell, they do traditional ‘Pub Grub’ really well. The dishes are fresh and seasonal, and there is always something for everyone. The setting is also beautiful both inside and out so makes for a really special place to go for lunch or dinner.
Name one place in Norfolk people should visit?
Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse Museum is a really interesting place to visit if you want a glimpse into the history of rural life in Norfolk. It also has a great playground and farm for children.
Dogs or Cats?
Dogs, so I have a walking buddy.
